animation toolkit - 2

Animation took me back to basic for this animation, struggled a bit with arranging the the frames and shapes but i think this animation came out in the with a bit of tweaking and thanks to Nat for helping me out with this animation.

All of this is thanks to the 12 Principles of Animation which are:  

  1. Squash and Stretch - creates weight and volume to characters when it moves or makes any action.
  2. Anticipation - helps with major movement for characters e.g running, jumping or a changing expressions 
  3. Staging - shows the audience a pose or action that a character is doing for attitude or mood to help with the story line 
  4. Straight Ahead and pose to pose - Straight Ahead is the start of a first drawing/frame and keep drawing until the end drawing, whilst Pose to Pose is more planed out and intervals the key drawings/frames throughout the animation
  5. Following Through and Overlapping action - when the main body of a character stops so other parts can move e.g arms, leg, hair ect. And overlapping action is the change of direction when is moves or makes a action, for example when hair or clothes continues moving forward when a character makes a new move.
  6. Slow out and Slow in - when starting a action it need to be near the pose so slow in and slow out softens/smooths the action to become more life like 
  7. Arcs - makes animation more natural actions and better flowing (like the pendulum animation above)
  8. Secondary action - were actions add to and enriches the main movement to make a character more dimensional 
  9. Timing and Spacing - for this its best to at my first animation where time is for how long a object take to get to the other end and spacing is more how is gets there
  10. Exaggeration - is not a extreme movement to a character but more of a small movement like a walk, wink of a eye or turning a head
  11. Solid Drawing - is the basic form of three dimensions using volume, weight and illusion.
  12. Appeal - is clear drawings, readable designs and personality development that will engage audiences into the animation

after last Friday creating our monster inc character creating and drawing it in Illustrator, this week it was time to color them in with new techniques with the pen tool, live paint bucket and  appearances tools to Finnish off our monsters.

Contextual studies 2

Contextual studies has given me a early in sight of modernism and how we as a class will read it and understand it, for example what have touched is how German Expressionism in monster and twisted films where it gives of these dark themes & shows with shadows looming on the surface, then on how it is copied and/or tribute in new films in Hollywood. The task is a great help to get me ready to research before a essay.

Metropolis - film review 2 Space & environment

Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang

In 1927 Fritz Lang created one of the most inspiring SCI-FI films called Metropolis. The film is a fantastic SCI-FI as most people would agree like Roger Ebert from Chicago Sun - Times who states that "Does what many great films do, creating a time, place and characters so striking that they become part of our arsenal of images for imagining the world" (Ebert, 2016) this statement is ture in that the settings and designs of the film make it a pure enjoyment to watch, Metropolis goes into themes like equality, sins and death. This film has given many inspirations to nearly every SCI-FI films that we all know and love today from Star Wars to Matrix, in fact if you look closely the the Machine Man in the film looks a lot like C3 PO from George Lucas' Star Wars, this is only one of the many examples of how much this film influences the future SCI-FI films we all know today.

The film starts with the poor workers going to work city and the rich staying up above enjoying life, for Freder life was fun and games until he see a lovely girl called Maria, when chasing after her he see the horror of how the city is working and after telling his father Joh Fredersen, he is compelled to save the worker by any means. However his father tries everything in his power to stop any hope for the workers after hearing Maria's speech, unfortunately the help he seeks in the inventor C.A. Rotwang to stop the workers ends up to be a revenge plot to destroy Jon Fredersen, his son Freder and his beloved city Metropolis by using a robot to take the form of maria a sinful robot who loves the misfortune of others and surrounds herself in sex and parties, to control the workers to rise up and stop the torture. So it is up to Freder to save people and set things right between the two classes.

The one thing to note about this film is its mood and tone setting sets/backgrounds that help this film just all the more fantastic in setting who is who and who we the viewer should root for. For example the beginning scene we see where the workers go to work city the landscape and setting gives of this gloom and doom feel to the audience with it looking dirty and big complicated machines that could kill if over worked on them (which could of happen if given more then 10 hours in the film). As for the city and the rich parts of they look polished and new as if nothing but the finest for the rich as well as at night its full of life and lights, this help define what is not alone the key theme of the film but also the conflict in this film for the characters to react and tackle in the story.

The film on the whole is a beauty to look at with its special effects for Jami Bernard form New York Daily News thinks that "Each frame of this classic is drop-dead stunning." (Bernard, 2014) you can see yourself that this film has great visuals, for example when Freder sees the machine and hallucinates the machine into a ginormous head eating the poor workers  this scene gives the view a great sight and makes the film all the more enjoyable. As for Siegfried Kracauer he extends this thought on the film by saying “Metropolis was rich in subterranean content that, like contraband, had crossed the borders of consciousness without being questioned.” ( Philip, 2015) talking about the themes of the film and how powerful it can be to the viewer when watching which is every true in that the story tackles the themes of equality, sins and death to help us understand how this can effect our view on the world.

Maya went great, im getting a good understanding on how to use the software, like with the NURBS curve tool i can draw my object then fill in the 3D and the polygon part by building it from scratch to make the object was great to know, im getting the hang of it.

Toolkit Maya - 2 monster inc university character designs

Maya was awesome today i enjoyed, we had to make background characters for monster in university (pretending theirs a 3 film coming out). We were given cups to pick the number of eyes, legs and arms to use for the character, for myself i got 2 eyes, 4 legs and 2 arms. (had a lot of trouble with trying to make the first photo light and see the drawings so i hope this is ok)
